Project Information

A highboy has been on my bucket list for years as cabriole leg shaping is something that I really wanted to try. I wanted the highboy to resemble the secretary desk that I built a few years ago so many of the details on the highboy are fairly simple and not highly ornate. I used cherry for the primary wood, maple for the drawer boxes, and some really colorful birch for the drawer bottoms and backboards.

There are 11 dovetailed drawers and two hidden dovetailed drawers that are accessible by removing the center top drawer. The center drawers on the upper and lower case feature a fan carving. Three urns and flame finials top off the upper case and two drop finials hang from the lower case. The bonnet top is 1/8" stock that is bent and glued to the scroll board and bonnet supports.

One unique feature is the side returns are angled downwards instead of their top being square to the case. This happened as a result of a mistake I made when laying out the shape of the goosenecks but if I ever do this again, I will angle the returns downwards again. It's a subtle detail but I absolutely love it.

Overall dimensions: 87" tall, 41" wide, 26" deep
Hardware from Horton Brasses
Finish is General Finishes Arm-r-Seal Semi-gloss

Great piece. I've always wanted to build one. Maybe someday. The wood matching is beautiful…absolutely makes the piece.
The background reminds me why I moved from Wisconsin down to Florida.
