Project Information

I started woodworking a year ago and told my son that I would replace his kitchen island. I stumbled across a live edge chunk of Chechen and we decided to use it for the bar/back splash

Here's his old island with the back of the oven exposed

And the Chechen:

The design was challenging because he only has room for 9" cabinets on each side of the oven, there also needed to be a back splash to cover the back of the oven and I wanted the bar to be rock solid
I used 3/16" angle iron for the bar top sandwiched between two 2×8's to form a header on my little mini wall. For the back splash I used floating shelf brackets so the the Chechen simply slides down onto them and can be removed if necessary

The cabinet is made of hickory with book matched panels in front and on the sides.
The counter tops are copper over two layers of MDF, they will patina more in the years to come to match the Chechen bar
I threw in a garbage can also made from scraps from the island, including a Chechen handle

My son is thrilled with it!
Thanks for looking!
