Wine Presentation Box (Walnut & Ash)

Here is a wine presentation box that I have seen on LJ and also in several journals/magazines. I needed a gift for a co-worker who earned an advanced degree balancing work and school. The box is walnut with an ash panel in the top. The walnut is actually wide plank flooring that my lumberyard was selling at a good discount (they were clearing out damaged and cracked pieces – see picture 6). It is 3/4ths thick but that includes relief cuts so I planed it to 5/8ths to remove the relief cuts and create 5/8ths stock for the box. I liked the 5/8ths as 1/2 (what the plans called for) just didn’t seem beefy enough and 3/4ths is too thick. Basic box joints cut on a table saw template/sled and splines in the miters are really the only tricky parts. I also added small curved trim on the inside front corners. The ash panel is from a piece of 5/4 stock that was cut in half for a mirror grain pattern. The finish is borrowed from “Boxman” here on LJ (tung oil+poly/spirits+wax – thanks by the way). The plans are good, I would make the box about 3/8 longer as a few very tall bottles don’t fit (and I already adjusted for the slightly thicker stock). It’s a great gift idea for a wine enthusiast and easy enough for weekend work. I’m thinking what else I can do with bargain wide pieces of walnut.

Pretty sure there a few guys here that would love to take some of that walnut off your hands…

But I doubt they’ll do much better than this project. Well done!

Great box, the contrasting wood really makes it stand out.
