I got a screamin’ deal on a new gas stove and a vent hood, but decidedly lacked a place to mount the hood. What we have here is a 3/4 maple plywood box with a fixed shelf dadoed/glued/screwed, m&t cherry face/side frames with pine beadboard back lining and side panels, hung on a cleat. I stained the back to match the trim in the dining room, from where you can see this, and painted the inner sides a nice green colour which doesn’t really show here. the rest is a couple of coats of amber shellac for tone and poly for protection.
Simple, but effective until the kitchen gets done. The green on the walls is actually nicer in the pictures than in person… there are some horrible horrible paint colours I’m dealing with in this house…
I thought I’d post as it’s really my first project, outside of stuff I’ve made more to learn my machinery than to actually complete. not that this wasn’t a learning project too…

very cool. Nice figure in the face frame. Are the sides cherry also?

Well if that is your first project you are off to a roaring start. Looks both well built and very functional.

Sweet little cabinet!
Before I read the story, I had already made up my mind to tease you about the wall color. :-)

thanx all! the side frames are cherry, with pine beadboard just glued to the case in the field. the lighter green you can see in the pix with the stove, right beside the top corners of the stove, are more accurate for the wall colour. gloss paint. brushed. this isn’t, however, the worst colour in the house – two bedrooms are bubblegum pink… that will all change :)
this cabinet was a chance for me to try out a bunch of different techniques – theory is great, but hands-on is what counts. each project is building on the previous, if you’ll pardon the pun. i’ve learned that, for me, squaring the mortise is better than rounding the tenon. i’ll remember to measure the centre rail/shelf facing from the top/bottom rails, not from the stiles at dry fit. and cut twice, measure once… or is it the other way around… :)

I like the colour :)
we just painted a small “cubby” area of our living room a beautiful shade of green .. it changes colours all day long, depending on the light. It goes from lime green, to granny smith apple green, to sage green… and everything in between.

Looks like a great first project. It’s doing the job so that’s half the battle! (I’d get rid of the green to. And I’d make double time getting rid of the bubblegum pink!)
