Fr. Gerome wishing to display the Chrism oils, looked through his church furniture catalogue and found a cabinet he liked (only ~$300), except he wished it to be triangular and mounted in a corner. Somebody mentioned my name; you can guess the rest of the story.

Starting with the height of the Chrism bottles and the available space in the corner where he wished to have it mounted, I drew up some SketchUp plans for his approval. The construction is basically tongue and groove joinery using flat sawn red oak. The two intermediary shelves are floating 1/4” glass, dadoed into the sides. The face frame is held to the carcass by means of pocket screws on the top and bottom to facilitate repair/replacement should the shelves ever break. The door is partially inset with a 3/8” rabbeted door lip and incorporates an arch in the top of the door to reflect elements of the existing interior architecture and furnishings. YiaYia (wife) and I tried to do some glass etching on the front, but it did not turn out as well as hoped for and I went with plain glass (better to view the contents I justified). Also tried my hand at steam bending and combination steam bending/lamination for the glass retention beading around the arch. Settled for utilizing some door weather striping stapled in to secure the glass.

Finished the cabinet with a dark “Kona” stain and a few coats of lacquer. Gotter done in time for Holy Week plus time to travel to San Jose to watch the Sharks. Good news, only cost ~$65 plus labor (gratis). Thanks for look’in in and keep the man glitter flying.

P.S. YiaYia ordered some new furniture and wants some end tables and lamps in the “Craftsman” style, looks like busy Spring/Summer ahead.
