Hello and thanks for taking a look.
This is a small box made from red oak and walnut crotch.
It features wood hinges and the top and inside bottom are book matched.
The wood hinges are pegged with walnut.
I used a drill and sanded a small scrap stick of walnut into a dowel that more or less fit a 7/16 hole.
The box is 7”L x 4”D x 3.5”H.
The finish is several coats of thinned Minwax polyurethane that was wiped on with a paper towel.
This box was not purpose built, I just needed a project.

Edit…
Last night I decided the lid needed a handle so for better or worse it has one now.
It’s a little oversized but not as big as the picture makes it look.

Very nice box Charlie! The book matched top has a really interesting pattern to it.
I’m interested in the wooden hinges. How were they made? They look like they would be fun to do.

Thank you.
I think the book matched walnut crotch has a very interesting pattern too.

I have tried to describe my hinge building process a couple of times, but was not pleased with it.
The first one I built took 1000 tries after watching every YouTube video on wood hinges there is.
Now it seems easier than installing a metal hinge.
I will think about the hinge build description some more and will post something.

Yup, I watched some of those videos too and they look fairly simple. But your comment made me wonder.

Sharp looking box, Charlie. That walnut sure does have a nice pattern.

Nice looking box – great contrast between the walnut and oak. I like your last comment -that you just needed a project. There are times when I’ve had that situation and…often a box is the result. :)

I can usually invent completely new ways to mess things up, it’s kinda my super power.
You will probably nail it on your first or second attempt.

Congrats on top 3 Charlie!
The 4th picture of the top of the lid looks (to me) like an x-ray of a creature trying to cover its head with its hands, lol.

Thanks to all.

LOL, and now that it’s pointed out the top does kinda look like an x-ray of an alien (creature).

Major points for the wooden hinges pegged with contrasting wood – that’s craftsmanship !!!
