Project Information
This is a prayer kneeler or prie dieu. It is made out of solid white oak finished with a Watco Natural oil/varnish. I made the knee pad by wrapping upholstry grade fabric around 3" of firm foam pads and stapling to the bottom of a piece of plywood. I used cabinet bolts and threaded inserts to attached the knee pad assembly to the kneeler board. I used a bandsaw to cut out the rought shape of the appliques and then hand carved and sanded to give a handmade look. This is the first project where I used Sketchup to help me make templates and figure out dimensions for scale and to locate the pivot point of the kneeler section. Although this was a somewhat simple project, I was really happy with the fit and finish I acheived. It is truly an heirloom that will be passed down for many generations.
