I made this table about 4 years ago when my second son began to walk. We had a glass and wood coffee table at the time, and were concerned that he would break it, and hurt himself. So I made a small table that I didn’t mind if the kids tore it up too bad. Good thing too, the 1 year old decided to help me out by using a screwdriver, on the freshly sanded top, before I could put any finish on it. You would be surprised how deep a child can drive a screwdriver into pine.
The table itself has a pine top, with oak edging and strechers, and popular legs. It is all pegged together with walnut pegs (made from dowels). I am surprised how well it has held up. The top has spilt along the edges and a little where the legs come through. (who knew that wood moves!!! :D)
Since it was made, it has served as a diving board, a dance table, a battleship, a bed, a tent and lord knows what else. I am looking forward to passing it off to one of the boys when they move out. Assuming it survives the 5 of them.

The first woodworking project is always to be remembered, something like the moment you got your first kiss.
I am sure you learned quite a bit from the first project.
This is a nice little project.

Great looking table. I suspect that it will last the onslaught of the boys – did you say 5 boys – wow what a man. I had two boys and that was a handful to raise. Good for you.

that was my thought as well, Bill,—5 boys? yikes.
Great table and so filled with memories. Did you sign it, date it?

It’ll be more valuable to you with their nicks and scratches on it. Maybe when they start reaching puberty you should stack railroad ties under it for safe measure! Lol
I still have a dining table i made where my son got ahold to the bottom of it with a crayon when he was little. Don’t think i could ever part with it.

Wow, I wouldn’t have the nerve to subject anything I’ve built to that kind of torture!
