I made some shutters for my house using recycled wood, the wood was from my friends deck that I helped tear down and rebuild, some boards were still pretty good just weathered, the material is red cedar and even after about 7 years sitting in my back yard only a few were really rotted

This is a really cool project! I like that you used reclaimed wood.

What kind of paint/primer did you end up using?

They look great! I love the price. ;o) I am planning to make cedar shingles for my house this spring. I was going to make them 3 boards wide using 4” stock and stain rather than paint them. How wide were your boards?

they were origially 2×6’s but to clean them up they ended up about 5 in x 1 1/8 and the cleats were about 4 1/2 wide

Thank you. That’s about the size I will have with 3 boards.
