Very nice. Is it all solid wood or some veneer? Either way it is a piece of art. I like the spline spacing… I wouldn’t have thought to do that.

Boxes are deceptive. They look very simple but they actually are technical challenges. You have to get the hardware on right or the lid doesn’t close or sit properly and the little pieces are tough to make.

Your lid sits nicely on the box. The curly maple “pops” beautifully. You really have a lot of pieces for just a little humidor box that technically comes together real nice. This is a very classy project that looks to be well executed.

Fine cigars indicate a level of sophistication and achievement. They should be stored in a humidor that looks this nice.

Scott, what did you use for a finish to make the maple “pop”? I’m getting ready to start some mantle clocks for Christmas presents and the face will be curly maple. I was planning on following the instructions that Marc used over on TheWoodWhisperer site. Thanks in advance for any finishing tips!

Absolutely beautiful box. Can you elaborate more on the finish that you used? Did you round over the mitered corners? I am building a box now, using the same maple with purpleheart splines. I’ve been thinking about rounding over the mitered corners but wasn’t sure how it would look – if you rounded yours, it’s a winner!

yes, I did round over the corners, though they are not mitered; but rather are rabbeted (which in a 70% relative humidity environment gives the box more inherent stability from warping and racking forces). The finish is actually very simple: I used 100% tung oil…one or two coats…allow that to cure fully and then sprayed the outside with precat lacquer (satin from M L Campbell) thinned 4 parts to 1 part lacquer thinner… mabye 10 coats, sanding with 400 grit paper between coats.

Beautiful fit and finish. Real craftsmanship!
