Here’s a project I made one snowy Sunday last February

It’s a mid-evil style trebuchet. After researching various designs on the internet, I downloaded a plan of this desk top model. These are a lot of fun to build and shoot.

This one is made of 1” x 1” oak and is ~24” tall, 12” wide and 20” from front to back. This is a good exercise in simple woodworking skills as it has a tapered beam (made on the jointer) and a bunch of lap joints. The counter balance weight is a crab fish can filled with lead weights and 1/2” nuts.

This size shoots plastic golfs balls about 10’. My nephews liked this so much I gave it to them.

You can make these in any size, checking out the large one’s on “YouTube” was a great way to kill an evening.

Where did you get the plan? I’ve been wanting to build one of those.

Really nice project Bob – I know a History teacher that would absolutely love one of these. Can you post a link to the plans?

That is great!! One of my first wood working projects was a trebuchet that I pegged together. Mine is also made from oak, and the base is about 18” tall. With 4.5lbs of weight it can wing a bouncy ball 3 houses down the street. I used 1/4 threaded rod, and a copper tube for the axle. These are alot of fun to make, and play with.

Hi Bob;

Neat.

What are you going to do if it doesn’t snow this year?

Hi guys, thanks for the interest. Here’s the link. http://www.ripcord.ws/

This plan is for a larger tennis ball thrower, I scaled it down to desk top version size. I’ve seen these made very small, built with toothpicks and very large made, built with logs and beams that can throw cars and pianos (I’m not kidding). Make your’s to suit your needs.

Karson, I wanted to make it to the pumpkin contest but the timing did not work for me. I did check out the web site and it looks like a ton of fun.

Lee, This year I’ll most likley make a potato cannon our of PVC pipe. These will shoot up to 100 yards with very little effort. Again, if you check our You Tuve and search under patato gun, you’ll see some amazing inventions of all sizes.

That’s pretty cool, Bob. It started snowing here finally and I was just talking to my wife about building one of these to deter a nosy neighbor. Thanks for the link!

Bob -

Very cool and interesting project! The Boy Scouts build larger scale versions as part of their Pioneering Merit Badge. Last summer my son’s Pioneering class built one and used it to throw water soaked sponges at Scoutmasters rowing in a race on the lake.

Bob, Great project and a good size. My brother-in-law has been talking about building larger model, perhaps I will look at this size a as a good gift for him.

Very cool , I could use that to return my neibors dog dropings !I seen a documenatry on building a trebuchet last year i think it was on the history channel it took them a few weeks to build , they used different lengths of rope to hit their target ! How accurate does it fire objects ?

Woodgrain,
This one is real small and only shoots golf balls but it does shoot them consistently. I was aiming at stacks of paper cups arranged in a pyramid shape. It was easy to adjust for accuracy.

that is a great project. I’d be curious to see how large of one I could make – that still keeps it’s projectiles safely in my backyard.

I never heard any follow up on this years contest Karson, Did the Yankee Siege (from my neck of the woods) fare well again this year? Did someone else take the crown this year?

Scott: I believe that they took it again. 1658.55 feet. It was a bad weekend. because the hurricane winds were blowing into the barrels of the cannons.

Here are the results for this year

A girl got hurt this year, a pumpkin went into the crowds about 5 feet from where I was standing. This family had lawn chairs all set out and the people couldn’t get out of the way. They were tripping over the chairs and BBQ.

Thanks for that link Karson. I’m kind of surprised that number two came in so far behind! Not bad for a local farmer who got into this on a whim!. I hope the bar gets raised for the next round of punkin chunkin, and there can be a closer competition. I hope they can keep things fun and safe moving forward, those machines can be real dangerous.
