... and so I headed to the workshop to talk to the endcuts of wood from our bench-making project. The first piece that I picked up, and spoke my mantra to, was the one shown here.

This wood-spirit definitely wanted to tell me something but I’m not quite sure what it was saying. It does appear trapped and perhaps a little desperate not to end up in the fireplace.

I asked; I heard; so, now what?
How do I give this spirit a new life? What form is he begging to take?

The answers I do not have, but now we are one, united, and we shall walk this path together.

Nothing a little nip & tuck won’t fix.

very fun; actually 3 of the 5 pieces of wood that I picked up had an “image” in it. One has now had a little sanding done to it, showing off a duck’s head in the centre of it. I’m not sure what that will be. Another one is definitely a piece of “African” art which is now waiting for Rick’s purchase of a bandsaw. And then there is this one. Although it sits in the middle of a beautiful piece of wood (in my opinion) I think it’s future might be a small piece which encircles the face. I’m thinking it might make an interesting necklace… or maybe it should remain in the large piece, trapped and talking to people….

Hi Debbie;
—-hey maybe we’ve got something going here!

Ha! I wonder if there’s a way to market this thing of talking to trees? I’m going to start some classes on; ‘How To Design Your Next Woodworking Project By Hearing From The Wood’, with on site instructions for getting the most out of your wood.

I like what I’m seeing here and just know that you will surprise us all with a very fine ending to your wood story. Keep the results coming…..

”I asked; I heard; so, now what?
How do I give this spirit a new life? What form is he begging to take?”
When this happens to me I have found sometimes that if I will just keep on working the wood, the character that lies within the wood will just come out and register a picture in my mind of what shall yet be. When this happens all struggling to find the wood spirit is over and I can then work from that image in my head. From this point on its just labor intensive….., and yet the outcome is already completed in my head and I just finish what already waits for me.

....and then again, ”ask the wood”!

GODSPEED,
Frank

I’m asking; I’m asking
I think I need to sign up for your class!!

If the darned piece of wood didn’t have the layer of bark attached to it, I’d just start sanding. But I don’t want to destroy elements of its beauty.

And I just showed my daughter and she said that it is very freaky!! She’s likes weird stuff but she didn’t seem to excited about having this piece of wood around.

I’ll just have to sleep on it tonight (not literally) and see what pops into my head.

Hi Debbie;
Ha! I remember a show I did this last Oct. where I showed ”....the Mouth” for the first time. Well on the first day I had a lot of comments about how the piece made some folks wonder, they said statements like “erie” and “weird”. As you may imagne this was not the reaction I was wanting so I decided to turn the opinions and comments around. I believe that we can create for good or evil and its all in how we send out the vibrations of spirit. Well next day on Saturday I started drawing folks to the piece with positive vibrations and watched as before my eyes that same piece of wood art that just the day before had repelled many, now became a huge success. Folks could not keep their hands off of it and the comments became all for the positive and no negative comments the next two days.

All of a sudden without my having to say anything, folks just started commenting about ”the Mouth” and even likened it to Jim Carrey and Bob Dylan. The power of postive vibrations sent out I have found is amazing to watch, especially when it happens right before your eyes.

As artist we create the good wood art that others will want to fill their living spaces with! When I look at that image in the wood I see a kind and happy soul that is just wanting to get free into the living space of a den or private library, where this soul will become a conversation piece that will unite and enliven the hearts of many!!!

GODSPEED,
Frank

love the story and will be using it with my clients in the future, I’m sure!!
“you get what you give”.

I’ve did a little something with my piece of wood: just did a little sanding on the upper/lower pieces (not touching the spirt face).
I then did some “pyro” on it and just inscribed on the top “Set me Free” and on the bottom, “the Wood Spirit”.
My plan is to hang it in my workspace to remind me to listen to the wood.

Perhaps someday it will turn into something else, but for now, this is what it is
