Violin display stand

I’ve had thoughts of making one of these for some time, probably since I made the guitar stand for my wife. The stand could be used to simply display a violin or to keep one handy for frequent practice sessions. Regardless, a fiddle is safest when ensconced in its case.

The wood I used may be poplar, but well aged poplar. I’m not sure. It is what I call drawer wood because I usually find it along the curb in the form of dresser drawers. All the cuts were made with my band saw and aside from the hinge, everything is held together with glue. The finish is boiled linseed oil.

Great project Dave. Some great additional photos too. I like the way you take care of your instruments.

Nice looking stand, Dave. And way to reuse someone else’s junk!

Lovely stand, Dave!
The hinge is at the top? What is the white strap in the first image, some sort of stop?
Thanks for sharing.

Yes the hinge is at the top, so that the stand can fold for storage/travel. The ‘strap’ is a small brass bar that keeps the stand from opening up too far. Now that you’ve mentioned it though, I think a strap would have been a better idea instead of the metal bar.

It’s nice looking, but it’s a student violin of mediocre quality. It’s at least adequate according to the teacher I had many years ago.

Across the strings usually.

Sorry, I couldn’t resist. Hmm. There’s no real accomodation for a bow on this. I envisioned it as an answer to one I saw in a museum once. Bows are safer in the case anyway. ;-)
