After making my first good natural edge bowl and giving it to my wife, my kid (only 5 at the time) started crying that he likes the bowl and he wants it. I promised him that I’ll make a better one for him. The bowl you see in the picture is the result. The unusual shape is due to the fact that a slender branch was coming out of the main trunk. I managed somehow to keep a lot of the branch.
The wood is oak and the finish is oil followed by shellac.
Enjoy,
Alin

Dan,
all of these pieces take about 1-1 1/2 hours to turn (or they end up on the floor). The biggest problem is that you cannot drag your feet since as the wood dries (which it starts to do immediately) it moves—this leads to uneven walls (part of the wall is thiner tan other parts). Another thing is to learn when to stop fiddling with the piece. You always want to correct something else but the longer you try the greater the chances to destroy the piece.

Mike,
It turns out that 50$ and a decent camera (with a little help from picassa) is enough. Wallmart and others are selling an “portable lightning studio” (http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&hs=Jc1&pwst=1&resnum=0&q=portable+lightning+studio&um=1&ie=UTF-8). What this allows you to do is control the light and avoid using the flash (bad reflection).
Dan, you asked in another post what camera I have. it is a Konica Minolta Dimage Z10 (sub 200$). I think the photos are decent mostly because of the lightning.
