The concept is based on Charles Neil’s Five Board Bench video which you can find here.
This bench is made from rough Knotty Alder. If you look at any of my other projects you will see that I like nice clean, simple lines. I think it had that.
This is the first time I primarily used hand planes in one of my projects and I have to say it went fairly quickly. I just got a Veritas Bevel Up Jointer with the fence and I have to say it was a complete joy to use.
Overall the project took about 3 days in total to build.
My wife said two things when she saw it:
1) “That’s the fastest project you have ever built.”
2) “Can I have it?”
Enjoy!

Awesome job Tim. For me (and since you included it in your post I’m sure you feel the same way) I think the highest praise comes from the wife. And it makes my day when she says she wants it. Hope you win the event. Good luck!!!

Nicest 5 board bench I ever did see! Like what you did with the design lines.

Tim,
Definitely not your average 5-board bench… a few steps up for sure!
I also like the nice clean lines, complimented by the overall solid look to the piece.
You did enter this into the contest, right?
