I turned a single 2x4 into a side table

I wanted to build a side table for a chair I just got done building. I wanted it to be simple (no difficult angles, cuts, joinery, etc.) and inexpensive. I used an 8’ 2×4, I also had to use an additional 12” of another 2×4, however, a 10’ 2×4 would have worked perfectly. I cut all the pieces down according to my cutlist. I then ripped them down to 1 1/2” on my tablesaw. I used pocket holes to join the pieces together. I then used dark walnut for the stain so it matched the chair. It is very basic and simple to build. Let me know what you think. And for those who would like to see how I built it, you can see it at https://youtu.be/wVfjLbSEKx0.

Very nice. I did a stickley side table from 2×4s as one of my first projects. Took three 2×4s plus a 2×6 but it turned out alright. Its good to see functional furniture made from less expensive wood sometimes. I know I can’t afford oak and walnut up here. Pine is really my only option.

JADobson, I like to show that nice furniture doesn’t always have to be expensive. I love watching what people create. But I don’t see enough people using wood that is inexpensive as well as unconventional. As much as I would love to be able to use walnut, ash, maple, and others, they are just too expensive for me. And for the average person who likes woodworking but doesn’t want to spend a lot of money, I think 2×4’s or even dimensional pine is the way to go.

Thank you for your feedback. I would love to see what your side table looks like. Send me a picture of it if you can.

I started my career using construction grade lumber.
These were some cool rockers made from 2×6’s

I just love that, functional furniture out of almost nothing.
Great designs,
should last for years. And will feel so great sitting in a chair along side the table created by yourself.
Great job
