My wife is real good at suggesting projects that will keep me occupied in my retirement. Her latest suggestion? ... a “Scrabble Crossword” featuring the names of my son, daughter-in-law and grand-daughter.

The individual tiles are 6” square, made from 1/2” baltic birch plywood, with router radius edges. The tiles are finished in clear polyurethane, lightly sanded and top coated with hardwood paste wax.

The letters are the classic “Futura Bold” typeface, cut by hand (using an exacto knife) out of sign makers vinyl (available at your local craft store). I used a paper jig to position the letters and numbers accurately.

The tiles are fastened together on the backside using thin strips of hardboard and many #6 – 5/8” wood screws. The result in a sturdy grouping of lettered tiles that will easily hang on a wall.

I found a few “crossword” making websites that allowed me to create the arrangement of words/letters that worked the best for the available names.

Let me know if this project catches your interest, OK?

I can’t be the only one to immediately read it as “slavery”, can I? Or do I just have a very weird brain that flits around the page???

Still, it looks great!
