Cheap durable yet flexible garage organization.

Not an original idea for sure, but I combined a couple other ideas to make it more flexible. The materials are simply standard 2×4s and 1/2” metal electric conduit. I found if you want them finished it’s way easier before they’re mounted.

3/4” holes are drilled at 3” intervals in a 2×4 at a 15 degree angle. The angle is sufficient to keep tools against the wall and to keep the 1/2” conduit rods in place. While I used a tilted table on a drill press, you can accomplish the same consistency if you first take a scrap of 2×4 and drill a hole at the angle you desire. Clamp that “holy jig” to your 2×4 and use it as a guide. Drill through your jig into the long 2×4 to make holes at a repeatable angle.

Mounting the plank is easy. I secured these by locating the outermost studs and using 1/4” x 3” lag bolts. Construction screws of the same length are even easier if you have them. I placed a third lag bolt in a stud near the center.

Golf balls on the ends of the conduit rods are not required but add a measure of safety to the long poles if they are head-high. To safely drill a hole in a golf ball, begin with two scrap 2×4s and drill a 1 5/8“ hole 3/4” deep in each using a Forstner or spade bit. One will be the base. Drill an 11/16” hole through the middle of the second hole. Sandwich the golf ball between the two, and drill a 11/16” hole halfway thru the golf ball. The planks hold the golf ball from spinning with hand pressure, but you could clamp it. Hammer the golf ball onto the conduit rod; glue is unnecessary.

If you want to fully secure the rod into the support simply drive a screw in the small gap in the hole to the side of the rod. This may be desirable to keep the rod secure when removing heavy items like ladders.

Cool ideas you mentioned. Especially the golf ball, finally a good use for them…. LOL
