Bookshelf with Drawers. This was on the cover of Fine Woodworking #264 NOV/DEC 2017.

The foot is Sapele with a Rosewood bead between the foot and main bookshelf. The main bookshelf is Maple with Walnut drawer fronts and Rosewood pulls.

I’ve only been woodworking for a little over 2 years, so this was pretty big project. I noticed after I bought the plan that it was in the advanced section. The foot was very complicated (overly so, I think) The plan called for the feet to be mitered together at the corners after the curves were all cut, which made it very hard to get square. I scrapped the first try and just used a single block for the feet and shaped them. This was much simpler and looked the same.

Thanks for looking.

Nice work red! I really like the walnut there in drawer front. Striking.

Good call on the feet, I hate it when the design of one part cascades into a bunch of issues for adjacent parts.

The case looks great!

I love the way the different woods contrast. It looks expensive!

Nice work. 2 years in, and modifying plans to fit your needs, if you don’t watch it pretty soon you’ll be designing your own plans. Keep at it, and you will only surprise yourself as to what you can do.

It’s clear you understand the basics, a square looking case isn’t an accident. The only fault I see is it looks like your base is just thinner than your case, having it just wider would always make for a more substantial look, and if it’s too much you can always add a small trim piece, and make it look like a design addition, similar to the bonnet. Probably because of the swelled bonnet that my eyes see the difference at the base.

Again, nice work.

The two drawers are a very nice visual in the piece overall, I really like them. Great job.
