I’ve been real busy and haven’t had time for the woodshop. I ran into Home Depot last night for some weed spray and took my usual trip down the lumber isle. I found this baby in the scrap pile. It is 3/4” x 3 1/2” x 7’. I was asked what was wrong with the wood and told it was ugly. I played it off and got it for a decent price.

Time will tell what it becomes.

What a guy. You bought the little ugly board from them to make them feel better. You are too nice…

LOL – I never think to check, but they always have stuff like that. I need to be more dilligent.

I’ve been in at least 100 Home Depots… and I have never seen anything but ‘ordinary’ in their woodpiles. The stars must be aligned for you. I’d be thinking about buying a lotto ticket.

-- I just got done cutting three boards and all four of them were too short. (true story)

haha. I hope you bought some paint to fix it.

Also, I’ve never even seen any hardwood at HD except for red oak.

Great find Marc! I have a board of quilted Maple that I found at HD once. It sure doesn’t happen very often though. I wish it did.

You lucky gun !
You guys in USA can at least buy hardwood from the big retailers !!!
Over here in Oz, we’re lucky if we buy good pine ! Ughh….
Guess living rural doesn’t help either !
I think if I want to work with Oak, Walnut, Maple & Sycamore… I need to emigrate again !!!

I’m confused. You say this was at Home Depot? I can’t ever find anything but pine, poplar, and overpriced oak that looks like the worst cuts from the tree at my local HD.
Ugly my @$$. I can see several projects for me in that board. I’ll give your money back on it if you’ll ship it to me.
Nice find.

Must be a regional thing. Here, maple is almost always in stock at HD. This is a rare find though.

I read stories of Ace Hardware’s carrying walnut and other woods. Here they don’t carry any wood at all, so sometimes you win and sometimes you don’t. And no, I am not going to ship it to anyone, my wife already has “projects” in mind.

I have 4 HD’s and 2 Lowes within 20min of me. They all carry maple. I always flip through their piles. I routinely find tiger maple, and occasionally some birds eye. The problem is they tend to be partial boards. Meaning on an 4” wide 8’ board maybe a 3 foot section may be good tiger maple, 2 ft ok and rest none. Whats is good though is that HD allows you to cut the board and buy what you want. The bird’s eye is usually small eye and the pattern could be very scattered. When ever I find a particularly good board, I always snatch it up.

Nice find.
The HD’s near me (5) Some cary Maple and Oak some only carry oak.
I wonder why they never embraces more hardwoods or atleat a dark(er) hardwood.
