Just finished this carving from downed maple tree limb. Love seeing them come alive.

Good one. I love seeing carvings. You did a great job.

The face has great expression. do you have a template or a sketch, or do you free hand it. I’d love to try but i think this would be out of my league!!

I wish I could do that kind of carving!
You let out the “spirit” hidden in that limb.

Thanks all for the kind comments. I freehand the faces for the most part, using a shop pencil to mark placement of features, nose, eyes, etc. They kind of develop as the carving goes along.

They all start as a limb or log.

I strip the bark and mark features.

Then start smoothing out and cutting in hair.

Then a finish sanding and waxing.
