Had no idea a lathe would be so much fun

Just purchased a used mini lathe and am learning the skill of turning. My first attempt was with a little basswood cube that became a tiny little bowl—big enough to hold about 8 stacked pennies— and then I had to try out a piece of Bradford Pear that was a gift from my friend Steve. It had this beautiful live edge on it so of COURSE I had to leave that on…even though I had no idea what I was getting into. Quite a learning experience! The bark that embedded itself in my finger is healing nicely… :)

Very nice! Just got into turning also and am finishing up my 1st project on a vintage lathe that I acquired and refurbished. Sorry to hear about the finger. :-)

Congrats on your new used lathe and lovely piece. Turning is almost meditative and completely concur that lathe work is not work.

Fantastic work. I really like live edged things.

A mini-lathe still turns small things as well as a big one would!

This is a beautiful bowl and the wood with live edge is wonderful. Nice work.

Thanks everyone for your comments.

Marlena—you’ve gotta try it, I highly recommend it—OG51 is right, it’s quite therapeutic.
