Well it’s that time of the year for our local area youth fair entries are being turned in for judging. Along with animal projects my grandson likes entering the wood working category where he usually does well. This year he made a segmented bowl with lid. Wood used was maple, padauk and purple heart. The finished shape and wood were all his own choices. He has made segmented items before but I had to coach him on a few things about his project like the knob and segmented bottom and lid that he had not done before, overall I think he made a nice looking project. We will see what the judges think by the end of the week.

Edit 2/9/18
Well the little lidded bowl got beat by a larger project. His project placed second behind a painted trunk. I think his efforts on his segmented project are excellent. If he continues learning and honing his turning skills he will be an excellent wood turning.

It shows a lot of work, learning, and creativity. I hope he does well. How old is he?

Grandson is 16 years old. He has been doing wood working in my shop since he was 10 years old. Started him out on simple projects and getting more advanced every year. This is his third year at wood turning. I have posted a few of his projects in the past.

Great design. I like every thing about this lidded bowl. Congrats to the turner and the coach. I would like to copy this design. I will put it in my favorites. Tks

Thanks for the nice comments LJ’s. Vernon this is a easy build, it is a 16 segment per ring design. I also have a 32 segment design drawn out but have not made it yet.
