Pallet style platform bed for daughter #3

I built hope chests for my first two daughters, but #3 sent me a picture of a pallet bed that she saw on Pinterest that she liked and asked if I would make her that instead. So I modeled it up in SolidWorks and went back and forth with her until I got “design approval”.

Pretty simple build of all 1x White Pine. It’s modular with the base split down the middle lengthwise and spliced together with full length deck boards at each end and the head board attached with T-nuts. This way I could get it up our U-shaped stairway.

I prefinished all the boards before assembly… and boy were there a lot of them.

She wanted the bed to match the trim in her bedroom, which is very labor intensive…
>Sand to 220
>seal with General Finishes water based Natural stain (works well for blotch control)
>Stain with two coats of General Finishes water based Pecan
>Two coats of Min-Wax water based Poly Acrylic, applied with a foam brush.

She changed her mind about the integral milk crate style night stand, so until she decides how she wants that, I’m calling it done.

She likes it a lot, but I can’t say this was a fun project, as the finishing was very arduous and I had Pine boards in various states of completion drying all over the shop for what seemed like forever.

Thanks for looking.

But your customer is very happy. That’s the best part. Great job sir.

Looks like a perfect finish, Matt! Ah, to be young and able to rise easily from such a close-to-the-floor-level…

nice job, Matt! Can understand why you are glad to be done – finishing isn’t my favorite part but I’m getting better! Sounds like a lot of work to get the perfect color :)

Very nice, Matt! Another happy client is a good thing. Is that a twin mattress on a king frame? I’m thinking she’s going to want that integral night stand—I like that idea, BTW.
