Live Oak “Thomas Fire” Wood Spirit

I have many friends who lost homes or were otherwise impacted by the Thomas Fire. We were evacuated for 16 days, but with minimal impact to our home although our neighborhood in Ventura lost just under half the homes. Somehow, the loss of life was minimal until the Montecito mudslide.

I have friends who had just bought a property in Ojai and were slowly renovating it prior to the fire. When the fire hit Ojai, their home was reported destroyed. Luckily though, the house actually escaped the flames (only because their property was being used as a staging area by fire). However, they lost most of their trees, a barn (full of family heirloom pieces that were about to be distributed to everyone), and several sheds.

One of the trees was a live oak that stood next to their house. I took a fairly heft piece to possibly turn a chair leg to see how easy / hard it was to work with (wanting to make one of the perch stools for them with wood off their property). I was staring at the wood, contemplating how to approach the turning when I decided to make them a wood spirit from the log. A couple of YouTube videos later… and this was the result.

Very nice carving.

I am sure that it will be appreciated. Any unwanted fire is a beast without regard for anything or anyone either

That’s a lovely gesture Todd. I really felt for all those who lost their possessions in the fire and mudslide. I hope they are able to overcome the loss in time and rebuild their lives again.

Great job on the wood spirit.
