When my son was two (he’s now 15) I made two of these, one for him and one for his cousin. I only have this one here for pictures. It’s a little dusty from sitting for a few years.

The truck body, except the fenders and running boards are made from the same piece of Maple. We found a huge slab, cut a few feet off, and started paring it down. The fenders and running boards are made from Cherry and have aged naturally with no stain. The wheels are made from Walnut and were also left unstained. You can see in the pictures the teflon spacers on the axles to keep the wheels spinning smoothly. Those are the only non-wood pieces. The finish is Toy Maker’s Finish from General Finishes (since discontinued).

On the bottom picture you can see dowels going through the axles. This was the result of repair (hey, what good is it if they can’t play with their toys and break them??). I also added the wedges on the front and rear of each axle. If I built another one of these, I would drill the holes initially and hide the dowels. Because the breaks were very uneven I didn’t want to risk having the holes off center. I also repaired the front brush guard, but I just glued that back up.
