When my step-daughter and son-in-law surprised us with the wonderful news, I just knew I had to create something special for our coming grand baby. Since they got married, I had thought of building a crib just to have ready for that special day but something better came to mind. I researched plans to see how the hardware worked, etc., but none of the plans really fit what I wanted to build. I searched all kinds of pictures and between the plan I downloaded (from “quality crafted pendulum cradle”) and the pictures I found that I liked, I came up with this plan – sized it all to fit an 18×36” mattress. After looking at the hardware in the plan, I decided to research other methods. I ordered Pivot Hinges from Rockler, they were perfect and so easy to use. I used the leg pattern from the plan but beefed up the cross-member and made the feet wider and uprights taller to account for the larger size of the bed. I used horizontal rails because I love the clean look of that on any project. I wanted a safe finish for the baby so I used General Finishes High Performance water based top coat in semi-gloss, 5 coats.

After the cradle was complete, I decided to get whimsical and create a mobile. We had been to the baby store and I saw how all those mobiles they sell are so cheesy and plastic – I wanted something completely handmade, even if it doesn’t wind up, play music and spin. So, I went to the left over maple and created the mobile. I used a threaded insert and made the knob which screws the pieces down on to the rails securely. I used adhesive cork on those parts so they don’t damage the rails when tightened down. The stars, clouds and moon are the only things on the project that aren’t solid maple. I needed them really light so I used 1/4” plywood and painted them.

It’s all complete. I ordered a good mattress, sheets and beautiful blankets so it’s all decked out for delivery (a surprise!) tomorrow. I sure hope they love it and that it becomes a family heirloom.

So pretty ’’baby welcome’’ gift. Nice and clean design.
