These benches are from a design by Aldo Leopold. Each bench can be built in a couple of hours. This particular variation came from the YouTube channel “Fun With Woodworking”, where the free plans can be found, as well as nice videos of the author’s construction and finishing of one bench. His careful and methodical technique is a good example for all of us.

We built four of these, two of which are in the picture above. My grandsons Ben and Ethan built the other two and took them home. Ethan’s sister Hope helped with the staining of his bench. All of the benches are outside, and are holding up well in the Texas sun. All benches were made with treated Southern Yellow Pine, which started out looking green but the unfinished benches have now (6-8 months later) turned to a pretty yellow color.

Other materials: GRK star-drive multipurpose screws, 1/2 inch hot galvanized carriage bolts, nuts, and washers.

Tools: miter saw, cordless drill, cordless impact driver, countersink bit, long Torx bit, ratchet wrench, sanding blocks, safety goggles, sawhorses, clamps.

This is another granchild-suitable project
