I made this for some friends of ours who were moving back to England. I wanted them to have a view of Vancouver and the North Shore Mountains. I used a jewlers saw i built from a friends plans and used plywood as a substrate. I glude 1/8” solid maple before i veneered it for extra durability! Walnut, cherry, birds eye maple, maple, zebra wood, wenge, ebony, mahogany, poplar and silver were used.

That is just outstanding Jono. I really like it. Did you put it in a frame, or is it designed to hang as is?

this is wonderful. I’ve never been west but I can imagine that this is what the view would be like. Well done

Beautiful job. This ought to be something they will cherish from North America. The contrasts of color and grain really worked out well. I have been wanting to do some marquetry. Perhaps you have given me the boost I needed.

Not to sound dumb, but, “So THAT’S what marquetry is!”—one of the many perils of being self-taught: if you don’t come across it at random, you don’t come across it. What a great scene. At first glance I thought it was San Francisco Bay at a really odd angle and really high hills in Oakland (duh) ... it’s early for me … but I did get it (finally). I think the grains and color strongly evoke the Fall in North America, in full swing here in Virginia (so naturally it rains after a long drought), which really hits Europeans right between the eyes when they get the full effect for the first time. That picture really ought to remind them of good memories.
