Tea light bar for Amy

A little Christmas gift for daughter Amy. It’s made of 1×4 red oak from the big box store. No run to the store was necessary, because everything was on hand.

The length is 30 inches, per “specifications”. The blocks at the end are square cutoffs, glued with Titebond II. The little oak buttons between tea lights are from a box of plugs and buttons accumulated over many years. The glass tea light cups came from Amazon, as did the electric tea lights (they flicker a little, pretending to be flames).

The finish is Minwax Dark Oak, brushed on, wiped off, followed by two coats of Minwax Wipe-on Poly Satin (love that stuff). Because this is to be used on a kitchen island with a sink, I added 4 square non-slip stick-on rubber feet to keep it dry and motionless. No fasteners were needed, although I considered decorative nails instead of the oak buttons. The buttons won this time!

This project was so easy that I’m inspired to use up some more surplus materials trying out different designs with different materials.

Tools: miter saw, drill press, Forstner bits, combination square, awl, lefty-righty tape measure

This would be a good project for a grandchild (sanding and finishing but not sawing or drilling).

Amy, tonight at her birthday dinner: “Dad, if you have some time, I’d like to have a few more of those tea light bars, in different sizes.”
