So during a party we were having one of my wife’s Co-workers saw the Purple Heart / Rock Maple Cutting Boards I made. He loved them. As with most people though, they had never seen Purple Heart. So a few drinks later he says,” I want one & don’t care what it cost, but can you make a Chess Board?” Sure I say, it’s just squares. He asks how much? and offers extra money if I’ll put him to the head of the line.
So I decided to make two. Their approx 17 1/2 x 17 1/2 inches. Squares are 1 3/4” . Made two different style frames and then cut a rabbet into them so the boards would sit proud approx 3/8 of an inch. Used 5 coats of Enduro finish by General Finishes (Thx Rob, Socalwood) I love this stuff.
We told him today we were bringing 2 boards too him so he can pick which one he wanted. He said bring both, his buddy wants the other one without ever seeing any of my work. Still get nervous if people are really going to like things I make. So they’re both sold!
I feel good about these. I came up with the plans & I built them. I couldn’t just give him a board for the money he paid, so I thought the frames were a nice touch.
OK Ladies and Gentleman, all comments and advice welcome!

I love those, and I usually don’t like purple heart. I suppose I’ve just never seen it in the right situation, well done. thanks for posting.

I agree with Steve. They look perfect from here. But I have a bias toward PH. I build a lot of things with it. As it ages, the colors change and just become more beautiful. Your boards a well done!

They look great. The miters look flawless, nice joinery. I like the branding iron signature in the last picture. Where did you find that? I’m going to get one at Lee Valley, different style though.

Don’t you just love it when people ask you to make something AND offer to pay for it!
Great work, Ken. I think I like the one with the predominately purple heat boarder.

Thx everyone, Glad people I respect like them. Not sure on how long they took being I had company in from England and had alot on my plate, so I worked on them from time to time. I would say about 8-10 hrs maybe. frames took a little time.
Seems most men like the one with the purple frame and the women in my wifes office like the one with the maple frame.
Thx for the kind words!

I like the the purple one the best as well.
Both are very nice, the purple though, I don’t see too much and it jumps out. It’s a bonus when someone actually flips out cash for the work.
