Making some progress, more in the virtual arena than actual! It seems I underestimated the amount of material I needed, so I have to machine more log stock before I can proceed. Here are a few shots of the birdhouse with the first floor complete…
I was short about 10 linear feet..and the way this goes together you do a layer at a time..so you need all the pieces..
A shot of parts piled up waiting..
While I have been idle with the actual construction, I have finished the Sketchup model. Here are some shots of the model..
Now that the model is done I can start looking for some good textures..

When constructing the model, I made all the parts into groups, and then organized everything on layers so I can selectively turn stuff on and off..

Hopefully, I can machine my missing parts this week and make more progress on the actual birdhouse!

I like the bird house, is it designed to attract Purple Martin’s? We don’t have them in California.

Pretty awesome, Brad! Frankly, the entire process looks tedious. I hope it’s rewarding for you. The detail that you are putting into it is impressive!

Thanks for the comments guys…
RAH..I’m not sure what kind if birds it’s designed for..you would have to ask John that..he designed it…I’m following his plans!
Tom…I guess it could be considered tedious by some..I am having fun building it….but I have a history of getting involved in tedious projects…I have been an active scale model builder since I was a kid. The last model I built was an HO scale house under construction..tons of tiny little HO scale 2×4’s to glue together with tweezers!
Dan…I think I am going to put a coat of clear WB poly on it just to seal the wood. It’s a gift for someone so after I give it to them it will be up to them if they want to keep up with the finnish or just let the cedar grey out naturally. I like the Western Red cedar, so I hope they re coat it to keep it looking new!
Karson..I guess on a small scale I know what he goes through…his latest bird houses are 10 times the size of this one!

David,
That is some great work – the actual construction and the Sketchup. Super job!

Very nice, I made a set of Lincoln logs for my Grandson.
That sure gets to be a pretty tedious job. Lots of repetition.

Tremendous job. No self respecting bird would miss the opportunity to rest there.

Nice work Brad. Both the Sketchup and the house. Nice design John.
I put up a Martin house years ago but took it down when I realized they eat more dragonflies and butterflies than they do mosquitoes.

Here is the definition of tedious!
AN HO scale house under construction..it was a kit I ordered off Ebay but when I opened it it was just a bag full of poorly cut up basswood strips. I had to recut every piece to get the walls to be somewhat square..
This stuff makes the birdhouse feel like skyscraper construction!
I wonder if the HO scale inspector will fail me for a fuzzy 2×4…

The Cape Cod could be used as a Purple Martin house no problem but the holes would need to be about 2” diameter .

My son did this model out of tooth picks , i find it a bit tedious
