Cedar Shelves

My neighbor cut down a cedar tree (shrub?) that was beside his house and asked if I wanted it. Well of course I did.

I thought I would get some soft cedar for practicing bandsaw boxes. It ended up this was the hardest and heaviest cedar I’ve ever dealt with. Resawing was really tough because of all the knots, they bladed tended to drift quite a bit. As you can see in the 4th picture that once I cut it open and saw the purple I new it would have to be built into some thing. The logs had a lot of character to them so they ended up as 2 live edge shelves. The 2nd one (built first) is mounted on two boards of cherry spaced 16” apart to match wall studs. Too bad the wall I wanted it on doesn’t have studs where I need them. Unfortunately as soon as they went into the house to let the varnish cure and sun light hit them for the first time the purple started to fade and was gone within five days. Oh well, live and learn.

The finish is about 8 coats of sprayed on spar varnish with 2 coats of brushed on and 2 coats buffed out wax.

You sure got the best out of that wood for beauty and character. Great looking shelves, they are really striking.

Rick; I’ve been in the Military for 30 yrs and I have attended way to many repatriation ceremonies.
pottz ; as mentioned above being in the military I get transferred quite a bit and in between my last posts I lived in a house with no garage…so no woodworking, everything was in storage. Now I have a small garage but most of the work I have been doing is just fixing the house nothing I would post about. Now I have been told I may be headed to Ottawa next summer, which means back to an apartment and no woodworking.

Thanks all for the comments.
