Here is my first attempt at making a pair of cornhole boards. I didn’t really use any plans to make them, but combined ideas from different styles I’d seen pictures of. I’m glad that I went with 1×4’s instead of 2×4’s on the frame and legs, the bulk and weight seemed too much of an overkill. But, I did use 3/4” maple plywood for the top to avoid the bounce that 1/2” tends to give. I used lift off hinges at the bottom and latches at the top to keep the two halves together when carrying the set. I also rounded the top edges as well as the hole, not only does it give it a polished look the bean bags slide in easier when they teeter on the edge of the hole. Any thoughts and comments welcomed.

Lookin great! As you have found, 1×4 is plenty for the rails. I made sets with both and quit using the 2×4 years ago because of the weight. I use .5 inch maple or birch ply for my tops unless asked to use .75 inch. My best set is plain birch ply, no finish. The corn make a little dust after a while and the bags really slide nice on the plain birch. Of course if it even looks like rain we get them inside fast! We have played on that set for several years now.

Leave it to an Aggie to overbuild cornhole boards (I’m from Clear Lake, so I know). I’ve been meaning to make some for so long and you may have finally motivated me. These are really nice. Mine, of course, will read LSU! ;-)
