Firewood is like a box of chocolates, you just never know what your gonna get. This all started with one pieceof oak that almost got burned. I wondered what it would look like if i machined it down. That started the making of about 20 votive candle holders as shown in picture 3. They were quick, easy, and pretty Christmas presents. I eventually figured out what i was looking for. For those who have actually split firewood woth a maul you know the ones… twisted gnarly and impossible to split. I took a couple of votives to my firewood supplier and asked him if i could dig through his pile (he has a residential tree service) and hand picked a couple of burls. I made the box in pictures one and two (approximately 5” x 12”) and the smart watch charging stand in the last picture. I havent yet decided what to do with the piece in the fourth picture. Any creative ideas?

Everything was finished with spray poly and waxed. I believe these were all pieces of live oak or white oak.

Thanks!

-- Brad

Beautiful stuff! The first 2 pictures are live oak for sure. It’s fun to find these treasures and bring the beauty out for others to see.

Nice grain Brad! I know the feeling! I’ll be out there splitting wood and the next thing you know I’m inside at the bandsaw. It’s a wonder I don’t freeze to death…
Thanks for sharing!
