Men's Valet, Texas Cedar Elm

This is the last batch of cedar elm that I had, not sure if I’ll ever get the opportunity to get anymore either, it’s a tree that has a long life like the live oaks and very hard to come by. Since the boards were milled from small logs, I’m not able to book match from side to front.

This is an open top men’s valet box, one of my own unique designs, it comes with a hidden compartment and a hidden drawer, a lift out coin tray and a removable tray on top. Though the drawers are cut out with a bandsaw I squared the corners off apposed to the rounded corners which allowed me to install cardboard backed with dark brown felt instead of flocking in which I used to do. The felt is so much nicer. I blended the drawer pull handles in by keeping them the same wood as the box was, the corner splines are Wenge, the hidden drawer is held in place by a magnet so that it won’t come out unless you pull it out, the hidden compartment is also reveled by way of magnets, the coin tray is the key which also uses magnets to lift out the false bottom door with.

It measures 6” x 13” x 7”, it’s finished with a single coat of tung oil, two coats of wipe on poly and a final wipe with minwax paste wax.

Another exercise in very fine woodworking, with some very attractive choices in timber and associated features.

Something that puzzles me, ...there is a diagonal line on the L/H side at the front, starting at the spline and finishing about mid way, what is it for please?

Excellent job on the handles too!

Rob, I’m thinking you’re talking about that line that starts at the spline and protrudes in an upper line stopping on the top edge? If so that was a split in the wood that I had to CA back together, I wasn’t able to hide the line but it’s secured.

Blackie, this is another great valet. Sorry you have come to the end of the line on this wood. It is beautiful. This design continues to evolve and improve. I like the square corners. I can’t see the drawer pulls. Another great job of craftsmanship. Keep boxing and keep posting.

Thanks Doug, Tony, Charles, Drew, Bob and Rob.

Yeah Rob, that front wasn’t my first choice as the back piece had a knot in it that I didn’t like either so I had to choose the lesser of the two.

Merry Christmas Everyone.
