Project Information
I know, I know… another live edge table by a newbie…but i learned a ton!
This was my first commissioned piece, finished several months ago. A live edge coffee table in black walnut, with accompanying end tables.
I struggled for a long time with the leg design. I knew didn't want to go with metal. and since the plan was for this to be a template for future tables, I wanted to develop a signature look. I needed something that could work with a variety of interior design styles. It had to be classic but flexible. And it needed to highlight the character of live edge and slab tops. I'm pretty happy with what I've developed - I think it's unobtrusive but handsome in it's own right, and works well with live edge pieces. It's a flexible approach that I've now used several times, and am continuing to use on my new pieces.
The simple, clean construction of the legs is shown in last pic. It includes tongue and rabbet construction, with dowels for added strength and visual interest. Furniture bolts with threaded inserts were used to attached the base to the top. The top was all hand worked, with both hand tools and power tools, as needed. It is finished with two coats of Tried & True Varnish Oil (Polymerized Linseed Oil & Natural Resin Varnish), then one coat of Tried & True Original Wood finish (Polymerized Linseed Oil & Beeswax) and one final coat of my own mix of beeswax and mineral oil. One thing not visible in the pics is the makers mark branded on the underside. It was accompanied by a set of matching end tables, which have their own post.
