This is just a little box from one of the plethra of books on boxes I have – it might be a Doug Stowe box, not sure any more. But this is the box I teach when I do a box class. It does not take much material, looks nice and incorporates some good learning possibilities, namely laminating a top, cutting miters, keys, splitting the lid, etc. The top is oak, walnut and bloodwood.

Very nice Betsy, I’ve been trying to make some boxes on the bandsaw since my lathe has been laid up. Its much harder than it looks. mike

The box is pretty enough on it’s own, then to add the diagonal in the top gives it an additional twist. Very nice.

That’s really fun. Thanks for giving my head a jog. More reasons to love Lumberjocks.

Ron, I think we all need to apply for a grant so we can quit our jobs and fiddle with wood everyday. Some sort of giant Roycrofters community. Only 12 more years to retirement (as if I’ll ever get to do that).

Thanks for all the compliments., but just so no one thinks I’ve stolen someone else’s idea without the proper credit—- the box design came from a box book – I think a Stowe book. The only difference between mine and the book is that I added a strip of walnut along the split to add some definition. Not sure if that constitutes the 10% rule to make it “my own” design or not. It really is a fun box to make and is one of the very few projects that I’ve made that I’ve actually kept and not given away.

Betsy – your design, his design – who cares. YOU made a great little box, so I will call it your design when I make a copy of it :-)). I really like it, it is different looking with that split lid.

Finally found where I got this design. It is in David Freedman’s book “Box-Making Basics.” It’s a design he borrowed from Will Wipperfurth. I feel better now – having given credit where credit is due. But as Cajun said – I did make it!!!! :-)

Betsy,

Nice job on this box! I have that same book from a while back and I remember seeing it there as well. Neat design.

Thanks guys. I appreciate all the positive comments.

Bob#2 = the top is on with a pivot hinge placed in opposite corners. I used an 1/8” brass rod. I had a hard time setting the rod so I ended up clamping the top to the box and drilling for the holes through the top and then plugging the hole with the walnut dowel rods.

Great box Betsy. I’m going to try some laminating one of these days. The top is also very intriguing. Nice work!

How did I miss this before? Very nice, Betsy. It’s amazing how such a small, simple object like a handmade box can make you want to just reach out and pick it up. I really like the delicate dividers inside.
