This is a little bowl I made for Roger the woodcutter and his wife. It is 6 1/2×2” high and made from some of the female box elder I got from Roger. I finished it with Danish oil and the 3 stage buff and wax.

cheers, Jim

She is a thing of beauty, ...Nice work Jim,
Just in time for filling at Christmas.

Now I was going to ask a question but at the risk of attracting unwanted attention, I looked it up.

Which trees have gender?
Members of the birch family (Betulaceae) are examples of monoecious plants with unisexual flowers. A mature alder tree (Alnus species) produces long catkins containing only male flowers, each with four stamens and a minute perianth, and separate stalked groups of female flowers, each without a perianth.

If I have a stack of timber is there any chance of it replicating so I dont have to keep buying more!! joke

Thank you all for the nice comments about the bowl!

Hi Rob. I don’t know if all trees are male and female but I do know that the box elder and pistachio are because I heard it from two wood experts (Harvey Irish and John Goodwin). Only the female box elder gets red in the wood and the wood in a male pistachio is black/ brown and the wood in a female pistachio is reddish to pink. The pistachio bowl in the following project is a rare piece in that it was cut from a grafted tree with male on one side of the graft and female on the other:

You brought this one back to life Jim. Roger will have a bowl of fun with this. Good to take care of your suppliers.

Nice bowl Jim, same sex marriage has just been passed by our Government, so there are male and female trees but if the tree is gay what the hell is it going to be called?

Thanks woodmaster1, Dave and Bob.

Hi Dave. I like them to see what is in that wood they cut for me. Most think it is just firewood.

Hi Bob, I’ll have to defer your question to the wood experts.. I’ll ask John when I get to Az.

cheers, Jim

Hi Ivan, You know it is more satisfying to give something away rather than sell it. I sell at shows because I love talking to people!! I don’t mind selling if something was ordered special, though.

cheers, Jim.
