I built this table to solve an age old dilema !!! How to keep the kids quite !!
this was built for twin 3 year olds, a boy & a girl, he likes playing with his cars & aeroplane, she likes playing with her farm animals !!! I found the secret to keep them both happy with this table, it is also functional for them to eat their dinner on, because I laquered it so any spills can be wiped up without effecting the top !!

Specs for this as follows !!

Top 1200mm x 600mm ( Particleboard )

Base 350mm high (lowish coffee table height )
please note : The reason I built it that height, is because they are only little 1’s I wanted then to be able to reach into the middle of the table (without standing on chairs )

I will run through the steps I took once it was built !!

To seal the entire table (top & base) I painted in oil base (beige) because kids can be ruff with things !!
I gave it a full 24 hours to dry !!
being an artist I have plenty of paint supplies, however if you havnt got art paint, you can pick up small tubes from a craft shop !! you will only need 1 tube of each colour !! (cheap as )
the top was painted with Acrylic “Water base” art paint !

Painting the top !!

  1. Masking Tape
  2. 1 inch Artist Paint Brush
  3. Black Texta
Acrylic art paint colours
  1. Black
  2. White
  3. Dark Green
  4. Light Green

Set out
I sketched out border on the top about 2 inches in & masked it up !!

Art Paint Application

I painted inside of masked area in Light Green, with a normal house paint brush ! before it dried I applied the Dark Green with the art brush, in a horizontal fashion, working it into the Light Green to give a subtle effect !
(refer to 3rd picture for close up) it is important to keep working it when the paint is wet . this helps the colors meld together ! once I got the effect I was after for the grass, I let it dry for a day !!

The roads !!
I marked them out & masked them with tape , I painted the roads straight black first , then mixed black & white paint together to get a charcol greyish color !! & painted them ! when the roads were dry I marked out white lines & painted them !!

I then pulled up the masking tape & with a Black texta & a straight edge , I drew the black lines between the roads & the grass !!

I sealed the entire top with a gloss spray laquere
This makes it absolutley kid proof ! over time it will scratch up without doubt, but in the meantime it has held up nice !!

Buildings !
I took camera down the street, took photo’s of buildings from other side of road !! then printed them on photo paper (about double passport size ) & glued them to little wooden blocks !! so the kids can move buildings around if they wish !!!

This project has been a real pleasure, because the kids love it ! & that is affirmation for me of “Job Well Done”

thanks for taking a look & I hope you see the joy of smiling quite kids !! LoL

Have a great day

Regards
Anthony

and thats it !!!

I really like your table. Also the photos of the buildings is an awesome idea! I may borrow that idea.
I made a couple of 10 inch square tiles painted in different patterns. A race track, farm yard, town, pond for my son to take on vacation with us last year. Tables like this are so much fun.

I hope the wife doesn’t see this one. It will be one more thing for the honey-do list! Well done! I built something similar years ago when I was an air traffic controller in the Marine Corps. We used it to train our new guys on. It got tons of use and was a blast to build.

Good job man!
