Inspired by the variety of bottle holders posted recently I decided to give this one a try (pattern found online).

Process
1. I printed the pattern and glued it to the piece of walnut that I found.
(yes, I know – you shouldn’t paint walnut) but that’s what I had that was “almost” the right size. I had to trim the sides of the pattern down a bit and I think it could have been thicker to provide a better balancing edge. But it works

2. I tried using the scrollsaw but the wood is just too hard for my scrollsaw skills. Back up plan was the bandsaw sitting beside me – that I had never used before. I managed to make it work.

3. Using the hole-making thingy I drilled the mouth opening and then a little hole to fit a 1/4” dowel into, for the nose.

4. I sanded the surface.

5. Cut the angle onto the bottom with the mitre saw and then finished the angle using the sander to get the “balance” to take place. That was tricky – and just don’t sneeze!

6. Cut some jewelry wire and formed the hands. Drilled holes in the side of the snowman and glued the wires in (the one is being stubborn and won’t remain tight… I think I’ll just say that he’s a little tipsy and afraid of falling so he keeps putting his arm down on the ground to catch himself).

8. Used the sander to form the nose, using a short piece of dowel.

7. Painted the nose using a marker and the body of snowman with some white paint.

8. Glued on 3 buttons and let it all dry.

There aren’t many posts I’ll keep reading past the “painting walnut.” However, it turned out to be a good story. Nice!

I stop by to relax a bit and look at some terrific woodworking and find Deb painting walnut. Sigh.
No rest for the weary.

I want to say this is a great idea and a terrific job Deb, I really do… but, but… ;-)

I know, Chip.. I know…. I actually thought about this all night long .. but in the end, the snowman just wasn’t a snowman in its “au naturel” state.

Great job Debbie. Even if it was painted walnut.

I noticed you didn’t paint your willow though.

that is true Karson
I did look at making it out of willow but didn’t think it would be strong enough … that and I wouldn’t want to paint my willow ;)

Debbie, Is this the prototype for Christmas gifts? Walnut?, made to make an impression? Very nice, very funny and very functional. Can’t be letting our cork get dry! Now can We?

Blasphemy! How dare thee paint walnut! Just kidding Debbie you have been ribbed enough about that.

I like your project. I still have not figured out how these things stand and doesn’t the wine flow out kind of fast when you open the lid or pull the cork? Gotta be quick to avoid alcohol abuse with that contraption.

I’m eating dinner and the thought occurs to me “I wonder why she didn’t just use willow?” So I log in and come here and see Deb has said “I wouldn’t want to paint my willow.” (sadly shakes head and contemplates taking Debs name off of the official “Walnut Lovers of America Club” list)

lol but Chip—I did have walnut in the stack of wood… doesn’t that count?

I did set the walnut down about 3 times…. do I or don’t I…. and since it was the only piece of wood that was close to the right thickness it “had” to be sacrificed for the greater good. AND… I didn’t paint his hat—I could have painted it black but chose to leave it the natural colour of walnut and let the wood shine through.. Does that count??

(And, just FYI, the bottle is “mona vie”, a health food drink.)

I can’tunderstand. Painting walnut? I can see painting walnuts, but walnut? Oh my. That’s almost as bad as me throwing away the cut offs.

Just ain’t right.

I know, Lee… I know…

I feel like putting up a cross or something: “Here lies Mr. Walnut, respected until his last days when he was sacrificed for a stupid little snowman and gave up his beauty in the name of “art” ...and was painted white.”

I have this great chunk of flame maple. HD doesn’t open for several hours, so I have to wait to go get a bucket of paint…

Cute wine holder.
