I have just completed a queen size Arts and Crafts, (mission), style bed. The bed is a wedding gift for my son and his wife who were married this past Saturday, (11/10/2007).
The bed is made from quarter sawn white oak. It has two coats of Varathane Dark Walnut stain. After each application of stain the wood was sanded to help highlight the fleck in the wood. After the stain I hand rubbed two coats of shellac. These steps were completed prior to assembly.
After the headboard and footboard were assembled I sprayed three coats of Varathane water based semi-gloss polyurethane. Tonight, (11/15/2007), I will be sanding the entire unit with 400 grit sandpaper to get a smooth surface. I will be delivering it to them tonight after they return from their honeymoon. I hope they like it. I will get some pictures of the bed once it’s in its new home and has some bedding.
I will be making a king sized bed of the same design for the wife and I starting next month, after I build a bookcase that’s on the honey do list.

Oh, boy. I get to be the first to comment. To upstage Victor Borge (“The Great Dane”), that bed is just three twoderful. I am particularly impressed by the finish—it’s my weakest point, so I probably get more out of a blow-by-blow description of that than the joinery. Not that I object to that, either. I have not had great success with water-based polyurethane, although I have a sneaking suspicion it may be due to the fact that my skin is extremely acid, and the water-based product gets gummy on the arms of the chairs on which I used it, and nowhere else. This might also explain why the covers of my music and cook books seem to dissolve when those of others are still in good shape. Maybe I’m a new Superhero: “Acidman.”

That is a beautiful headboard! After you get done “practicing” on this one, the one you make for you and your wife should be even better!
Great job.

The craftsmanship looks really crisp. The style can’t be denied. Hope they like it? Are you kidding me? They will love it!

That is one good looking bed set. I can’t wait to see it in place with the mattress and bed clothes on it. I think that you should set yourself up in the room and grab a picture of the newlyweds when they first see the bed – bet the looks on their faces will be priceless.

No crown, that must be an optical illusion, or could be the fact that I dropped the camera right before taking the photos. I did break something on the camera because now I have to use tape to keep the battery cover closed. The camera strap caught on the jointer bed as I was picking it up. I didn’t realize it until the camera was yanked out of my hand. Guess it’s time for a better camera. ;)

There is some fancy photographic term like “aspherical distortion” to describe what is going on in the photo. I can’t remember for sure….I have too many hobbies. ;-)

Nice bed. I like the finish. It looks to be made from the same patter as the one I did, http://lumberjocks.com/projects/174 I think from either Wood or Woodsmith Mag. I can’t recall with out looking. Am I correct?

Yes, it does appear to be the exact same design. How did you finish yours?

Ah, that looks just awesome! I love this style! I have to build a bed for my God daughter and am trying to talk her Dad into a piece like this.

Hi Homeboy
If this is any indication of a master craftsman, you ARE one. I have designed and built alot of Mission furniture when working for Iowa Prison Industries. In fact we had a whole line besides custom pieces. Now that I am retired I dont know what they show on their web sight any more. Go to ND2ELK and you can see the kind of things I like to build.
I really love your dog! I had a Golden and they are great dogs. We are not that far apart from each other. Perhapes we can get together sometime for a cup of coffee and talk woodworking.
Nice Talking!
