Maple Butcher Block Table

Project by cckeele posted 740 days ago 522 views 1 time favorited 10 comments Add to Favorites Watch

Well this project is now complete. All in all it turned out alright I think. Ran into a few snags here and there but its a learning experience sometimes. I really enjoyed making this butcher block table and have already started on some other butcher block and cutting board projects as well.

As for the table specs here goes: 25”W X 18”L X 4” Thick. Overall the table stands at about 34” High. Table top is finished in Watco Butcher Block Oil. The base was preconditioned and stained with minwax. Stain color is English Chestnut (my new favorite). As the table base was made of pine I decided to use a minwax stain preconditoner which absolutley made staining a good experience. No blotching or any problems at all. It also seemed to speed up the drying time of the stain quite a bit. After the stain dried I gave the entire table base a coat of butcher block oil which actually turned out really nice.

Well its back to the woodshop for me
Thanks for reading!

Nice BB table – how heavy is it? Should last a few generations.

Let me start off with “I really have no clue” so don’t take to heart what I am going to say (heck I never do :)

I would like to see it in the kitchen that it will live. Please tell me to shut up but the base, while very elegant and well done, seems to nice for the intended rough use and serviceable butcher bock top. I love them both and depending on the kitchen that it will live in may actually work well. Does that make any sense or am I just a dummy (which is entirely possible)?

Cajunpen,

The table weighed in at about 60lbs..

Snowdog,

These days I dont think people really use butcher block tables the way they did back in the day. Im pretty sure this table will never see a slab of pig or beef. I made this table for my sister and it will be used mostly as a conversation piece while she is cooking. She most likely will only by cutting fruit and vegetables on it and using it as preperation table. Thats why its only 4” deep too. If she was gonna use it to slaughter her dinner then I might have made it atleast 10” deep but now your talking about a 200lbs table.lol

The commercial market for these things is pretty good. Most of these tables are made and sold at the professional grade and are used in actual butcher shops.

As for the legs of the table, I was going to just taper some 4X4’s and slap thos on it when I saw these for 12 bucks a piece I decided I could give my sister something that looked a little nicer than rough cut 4X4. I still have to knock down the sheen on these legs as they are not meant to shine so much
