My son was after me to build him a chess board so one weekend he and I worked on this together.
The field is made our of red oak and black walnut and the border is also red oak. In hindsight I wish I would have used hard maple for more of a contrast but it turned out well and has lasted about 20 years with almost no signs of wear.

The bottom is dressed up with some burled walnut veneer. The inside is a sheet of double thickness MDF (weighs in at 14 pounds).
