I made this purpleheart bowl tonight. considering it’s in one piece, I’d say I’m happy with it… and improving!!
I rubbed it down with a bit of mineral oil after sanding it down to a 220 grit.
There’s a local bowl turners group meeting coming up next week. I’m hoping to pick up a few pointers there before starting in on bowl # 3.

Pretty daring to get right into bowlmaking with exotic lumber! Looks good. Congrats on keeping it in one piece!

Very nice. I have to agree with, Scott, very daring! Did you wear a respirator while turning the purple heart? I was told that if you work with it for a prolonged period of time that it would cause you to get a headache. Is this true?

I can’t think of any better way to learn than using something you don’t want to ruin!!
it actually went pretty well last night. I didn’t wear a respirator and felt fine. It took me about 3.5 hours to complete.

Good point, if we practice on crappy twisted pieces of firewood, then we may get frustrated and throw in the towel, having never given ourselves a chance.

Darryl, very cool bowl! I’m still working on my piece. My disc broke..so my husband…..Darryl made me a new one on his metal lathe. I have some maple I want to play with once I get my first one done. Always fun to create isn’t it?? Thanks for sharing…it’s beautiful.

Daryl, how’d you like turning that purpleheart. It’s pretty hard on the tool edge. I’ve not turned alot of it, but you sure have to head to the grinder a few times. The bowl came out really nice. What tools did you use to turn it?

Nice looking bowl. How does the purpleheart turn?

knowing that I wasn’t using the correct tools, I’m a little ashamed to say that I made this bowl with a combination of a parting tool, spindle gouge and scraper.
it got the job done, but I’m sure a bowl gouge would have made it easier!
I like purpleheart, it’s a really cool color that gets people talking.
