Macassar Ebony.... Ugh! Macassar Ebony.... Ugh! No-picture-s Click the pictures to enlarge them

Everyone has told me how bad turning Rosewood or Cocobola is for you. I think Ebony is nearly as bad; while this bowl turned out well I found the fumes/dust from it to be down right noxious and the wood to be very brittle when thin.

On the plus side boy howdy does it shine up well; It was nearly this shiny before I applied the finish. It also seems to have an iridescent quality to it. I’ll try again after I get a respirator.

Beautiful work and wood. You have hit the pavement running with this lathe work!

Hi Chris:
Nice piece and that ebony is particularly stubborn when it comes to forming.
You can smell the jungle it came from and that aint to good but it dow shine up nicely.
I use bits of it for accents .
I have 3 or 4 short logs here and no will to make a projct with it as yet.
By all means get a decnet dust hood with these exotics.
Little is known about their toxicity and that’s a good reason to take care.

The bowl looks great. Next time use a filter mask.

It came out nice. I’ve only turned a bit of it and it turned the shop black with dust. It left me thinking, “this can’t be good.” It does shine up nice, though!

I like this…simple, but very pretty wood and design.

Beautiful bowl. Sounds like working outdoors would be a good idea with that wood.

I’ve never been enamored of that smell, but You have made a beautiful thing from it.
