I have previously stated that I know nothing with regards to turning; I am happy to say that is no longer true. Approx. 6 weeks ago my wife picked up a used Jet mini-lathe for $100.00 and the basic Sorby tool set. After watching the video included with the tools this bowl was the end result. It is made of Marble Wood, a native of Burma and took me quite a bit of time to complete as I was VERY cautious.
Since that first bowl my wife and both sons have started turning. My wife is also turning bowls and learning to carve; my oldest son has taken up pens and my youngest has taken to turning key chains and bottle stoppers.
My wife, ever the optimist, signed us up for the fall craft show at our church. Needless to say I had my reservations. Especially when one considers how much of a perfectionist I am.
We were able to make enough from the craft show to cover the cost of all the materials plus a little profit.
Wow, I actually made money at woodworking! The down side? I now have to wait my turn on my own equipment (lol)

Wow! This is a beautiful job. And, that wood is nothing short of gorgeous. Sounds like you’re having fun with your whole family doing woodwork. Great!

Nice work on the turning – almost hard to believe it’s a first! What did that wood turn like?
What were your finishing steps?

Extremely nice for a first attempt. I hope I’m as lucky some day. Congrats on turning a profit (pun intended)!

wow Nice bowl!!!
Family affair: that’s awesome.
Now, I have to comment on the “on my own equipment” – didn’t you say that your WIFE got the lathe?

Chris you are going to either have to share your tools or buy some of your own. I really think that you have the ideal situation, the whole family sharing a common interest has got to be a GOOD THING! Lucky you. Oh, and your first bowl is beautiful.

Very nice Chris!
For a first project you did real well.
You’re lucky your family has taken such a strong interest in woodworking.
You may have to buy another lathe if you want to get better at it, but you can’t do much better than what I see of your first one.

Nice bowl, even more so for a first. While it’s cool that the family is now woodworking, it does illustrate some of the down sides of sharing. ;-)
