Learning on Cherry Boxes

Every project is a lesson for this newby woodworker. On these little boxes I learned how to make bevel cuts on 3/8 inch stock, cut in butt hinges with chisels, and strengthen joints with spines.

At one time, I thought I understood a bit about finishing too… But each new project constitutes
another lesson in different finish techniques. For these projects, I learned and now understand the joys of shellac. Using 400 grit sanding between coats and a final coat of wax from 0000 steel wool produced a baby butt smooth finish.

Larry, I like these boxes. They are clean, straight-forward designs that have a Shaker feeling about them. Nice work. This is a finish technique I use and have success with. It is similar to yours. Keep boxing and keep posting.

Nice looking box. And for me, every project is a learning experience, which is part of why I like woodworking.
