Russ from Simply Wooden Creations is hosting a scroll saw artist challenge and after a considerable amount of encouragement I went ahead and entered.

Keeping in mind that this was only my 3rd time ever using a scroll saw I think it came out pretty darned good.

I used poplar for the top of the hat, Cherry for the ribbon in the middle, a really nice Red Oak for the brim of the hat, and some unidentified burl to make the card suit pieced for the cardinal numbers on the clock. (Ok my kid cut the card suits out, I was just not able to figure it out!!)

I am uncertain why the pictures loaded sideways but since this is the Mad Hatter’s hat I guess it is fitting that things come out a bit wonky.

If you are interested please also watch the build video on this amazingly fun project.

Hats off to you on a cool looking clock. The Mad Hatter was one of my favorite characters.

Mine also!!! In fact, I just recently read a remarkable book called Heartless by Marissa Meyer that is a back story for the Queen of hearts, and the Hatter plays an interestingly significant roll in the storyline.

The Hatter has to be the most underappreciated character of all time. His influence is all over the place, yet not fully recognized.

Enough ranting. Thank you for the compliment!
