These were in the first batch of 9 pens I’ve turned… Pretty good results considering I’m new to the whole lathe thing. Like most folks I did a lot of reading up first but I’m fairly impatient and believe there’s no better way to learn than by making some sawdust and putting the metal to the wood. (Though after turning these I’m seriously considering swapping the HSS for some replaceable carbide… as I have some metal blanks I could turn as well)

First one is dyed curly maple… the next 3 are cocobolo (3rd one is dyed dark red) and the last is a little purple heart slim line pen. Good news for me is 3 out of 5 are already sold to folks. This pen making thing is a fun little hobby!

Nice pens, the blue one also has my vote.

Thanks guys. I wanted to dye to be a bit uneven and funky on that and to stay satin like the hardware. I’ve got all kinds of fun curly maple around and considering my usual work is finishing wood drum shells for folks I’ve got plenty of dyes to play with. Might try a fade/burst look on one and see how that goes.

Have your say...
